For commuters who arrive at the office drenched in sweat after braving hot, humid weather, body odour can prove particularly uncomfortable in an air-conditioned workplace, although a handful of practical measures can keep the problem in check.

Body odour arises when sweat mixes with bacteria on the skin, especially around the underarms, feet and groin. Consequently, maintaining good hygiene and keeping sweat-prone areas dry can help alleviate the problem, and regular washing and changing of clothes can also keep it under control.

One pragmatic step is to carry a spare set of clothes and change after reaching the office, whereas loose-fitting garments made from breathable fabrics such as cotton can further improve comfort. Moreover, those who become sweaty should clean the underarms and other affected areas with a damp tissue or clean cloth, then dry the skin thoroughly before applying deodorant. By contrast, simply using more perfume on sweaty skin may not resolve the issue.

For people who sweat excessively, an antiperspirant may prove more useful than deodorant alone, since deodorants primarily mask or reduce odour, whereas antiperspirants help reduce sweating. Dermatologists also recommend applying antiperspirant to dry skin. Nevertheless, if excessive sweating or persistent body odour continues despite these measures, medical advice may be appropriate.
