Premature greying can occur for a variety of reasons, including genetic predisposition, nutritional deficiencies and lifestyle factors. While hair dyes may provide a temporary cosmetic solution, adopting a balanced diet and a consistent hair-care routine can help maintain overall hair and scalp health.

Hair colour is determined by melanin, a pigment produced by melanocyte cells in the hair follicles. Although melanin production naturally declines with age, premature greying may be associated with hereditary factors as well as deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc, copper and vitamin D. For routine care, coconut oil infused with curry leaves can be gently massaged into the scalp, while amla, which contains vitamin C and antioxidants, can be incorporated into the diet or used in hair-care preparations.

Onion juice is another widely used home remedy; a small amount may be applied to the scalp for 15–30 minutes before washing, although it can cause irritation or an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. Regularly massaging the scalp with coconut or almond oil two to three times a week may also help alleviate dryness and brittleness, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence that these remedies can reverse grey hair or prevent premature greying.

Maintaining a nutritious, balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding excessive heat, bleaching, and harsh chemical treatments can further support healthy hair. People should also avoid excessively tight hairstyles and keep combs clean. If greying begins unusually early or progresses rapidly, consulting a doctor may help identify an underlying nutritional deficiency or other contributing factor.
