Although it is the monsoon season, sweltering temperatures are putting additional strain on household appliances, particularly refrigerators that operate around the clock. Excessive heat can cause a refrigerator compressor to overheat, reducing cooling efficiency and increasing the risk of mechanical damage. A few simple maintenance measures, however, can help keep the compressor functioning efficiently during hot weather.

First, keep the refrigerator at least 4–6 inches away from the wall to ensure adequate ventilation and allow heat generated by the compressor to dissipate properly. The condenser coils and vents at the back should also be cleaned regularly, as accumulated dust can obstruct heat dissipation. Avoid overloading the refrigerator, since tightly packed items can impede the circulation of cold air and force the compressor to work harder. It is also important to pay attention to unusual noises; a sudden increase or change in compressor noise may indicate a technical problem that warrants professional inspection.

Older refrigerators require particular attention because they tend to consume more electricity and may develop faults in their components. If a refrigerator is more than 10 years old, regular servicing is advisable, especially if it is no longer cooling properly. During periods of extreme heat, maintaining adequate ventilation, keeping the rear components clean and avoiding excessive loads can help preserve cooling performance and prolong the compressor's service life.
