Prime Minister’s Adviser and Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin on Friday said workers are the main driving force behind Bangladesh’s development and prosperity, stressing that ensuring their safety, dignity, and welfare is essential for building a self-reliant and democratic nation.

He made the remarks at a discussion marking International Workers’ Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2026 at the China Friendship Conference Center in the capital.

Mahdi Amin said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman strongly believes that working people are at the heart of national progress, as their contributions support industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and the overall economy.

He said the government is prioritising labour-friendly policies, job creation, fair wages, safe workplaces, and equal opportunities for men and women to improve workers’ living standards.

Referring to the historic Haymarket movement of 1886, he paid tribute to workers who sacrificed their lives for labour rights, including the demand for an eight-hour workday.

He also highlighted government efforts to meet international labour standards, noting that Bangladesh has ratified 39 ILO conventions and one protocol.

Mahdi Amin added that strengthening workers’ rights and ensuring social protection would remain a key focus of the government’s long-term development strategy.
