While diet is not a direct cause of asthma, certain foods can aggravate symptoms, whereas a balanced, nutrient-rich diet may help reduce inflammation and support lung health. Health experts emphasize that making informed dietary choices can play a valuable role in managing this chronic respiratory condition.

According to specialists, foods containing sulfites--including dried fruits, wine, and processed potatoes--may trigger asthma symptoms in some individuals. Similarly, processed meats such as hot dogs, canned meat, ham, pepperoni, and sausages are best avoided due to the preservatives they contain, which may exacerbate respiratory inflammation. People with food allergies should also eliminate known allergens, including milk, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, or any other food that provokes an allergic reaction, as asthma triggers vary significantly from person to person.

A 2020 review of scientific studies found that a plant-based diet may help alleviate inflammation, promote a healthier balance of gut microbiota, and enhance immune function, all of which could contribute to improved asthma control. Experts therefore recommend incorporating antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables--such as berries, oranges, spinach, broccoli, and carrots--into the daily diet to help protect lung health and mitigate inflammatory responses.

In addition, omega-3-rich foods, including salmon, sardines, walnuts, and flaxseeds, are encouraged for their anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin D-rich foods, whole grains, legumes, and magnesium-rich options such as leafy green vegetables and pumpkin seeds may also support optimal respiratory function. However, healthcare professionals advise consulting a physician or registered dietitian before making significant dietary changes, as asthma severity, triggers, and nutritional requirements differ from one individual to another.
