Ex-army man rearrested in Tonu murder case

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) operatives rearrested Hafizur Rahman, a retired army member implicated in the murder of Cumilla's Sohagi Jahan Tonu, after he failed to comply with a Chamber Court directive ordering his surrender within 24 hours.

According to a press release issued by PBI on Saturday, the former serviceman was apprehended from his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Saturday morning, amid concerns that he might otherwise abscond. Officials confirmed that arrangements were underway to transfer him to a Cumilla court to face proceedings in the long-running case.

Hafizur was first arrested and imprisoned in connection with the Tanu murder case on 22 April, before securing bail from the High Court and being released from custody on 4 August. However, just two days later, on 6 August, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division suspended that bail order and directed him to surrender within 24 hours, simultaneously instructing police to detain him should he fail to do so within the stipulated timeframe.

Acting on this directive, and citing the flight risk posed by the suspect, PBI carried out the rearrest early Saturday, reigniting scrutiny in a decade-old case that has long drawn public attention over its unresolved circumstances.
