An AI-powered automatic fine system has been launched on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway to strengthen traffic discipline and curb road-rule violations. The system will automatically detect speeding, driving against traffic, hazardous overtaking and other offences, enabling authorities to impose fines without direct intervention by traffic officers.
The AI camera-based system was inaugurated at the Highway Police Command and Control Monitoring Centre in Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Tuesday. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, who inaugurated the system, said 1,427 AI cameras had already been installed along the highway from Chattogram to Dhaka. Once a violation is detected, the fine will be automatically recorded in the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) database, while the registered vehicle owner will receive an SMS containing the details.

The minister said fines could be paid conveniently online or via mobile platforms, while repeated violations could lead to cancellation of vehicle registration under existing BRTA laws. He added that extensive awareness campaigns would be conducted by the Highway Police, Bangladesh Police and through social media to familiarise motorists with the new mechanism. Authorities expect the technology-driven initiative to enhance road safety, reinforce compliance with traffic regulations and reduce accidents by ensuring swift, transparent and automated enforcement.
