Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday said restoring public trust in the police and improving the overall law and order situation are among the government’s top priorities.
In separate messages marking Police Week 2026, he said people now expect a society free from enforced disappearances, abductions, and fear, where the safety of life and property is ensured, and justice prevails.
He said a strong relationship of trust between police and the public is essential for effective law enforcement, adding that police play a vital role in maintaining security, preventing crime, and protecting citizens.
The four-day Police Week 2026 will begin on Sunday and continue until May 13 under the theme “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First.” The prime minister is scheduled to inaugurate the programme by inspecting a parade at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka.

Tarique Rahman said the government is working to build a democratic, just and humane state, but that goal cannot be achieved without ensuring public safety and stability.
He also urged police to play a stronger role in tackling emerging challenges such as mob violence, juvenile gangs, drug abuse, and social unrest.
Highlighting Bangladesh Police’s contribution at home and abroad, he said the force has shown professionalism during national crises and in UN peacekeeping missions, but further modernization is needed to address technology-based crimes and new security threats.
