Bangladesh is observing Holy Ashura on Friday with due religious solemnity, commemorating one of the most significant and mournful occasions in the Islamic calendar in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.

Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds profound religious and historical significance for Muslims worldwide. According to Islamic history, Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with members of his family and companions, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH) while standing against tyranny and injustice. The day remains an enduring symbol of sacrifice, truth, and justice in Islam.

On the occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages paying tribute to Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and all the martyrs of Karbala. Across the country, Muslims are observing voluntary fasting, reciting the Holy Quran, offering special prayers, and participating in religious discussions and supplication gatherings. The Islamic Foundation also organised a discussion and prayer programme at the National Mosque, Baitul Mukarram, on the eve of Ashura.

Meanwhile, members of the Shia community are holding traditional Tazia processions and other religious observances in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country. To ensure public safety, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has prohibited the carrying of sharp weapons, as well as the use of fireworks and firecrackers during the processions.
