BNP Acting Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has urged opposition parties to present specific and practical alternatives in parliament to address the country’s gas and electricity crisis instead of merely threatening street protests. Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Friday, he said opposition parties have the democratic right to organise programmes but should prioritise constructive proposals over criticism and attempts to create disruptions.

Rizvi attributed the ongoing energy shortages largely to global geopolitical tensions and the conflict between the United States and Iran, saying disruptions to fuel and LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz had affected Bangladesh’s import-dependent energy sector. He questioned whether the government could be held responsible for international supply-chain disruptions and urged political parties to explain where and how additional gas and electricity could be sourced.

Warning against a return to what he described as a destructive political culture, Rizvi said Bangladesh had entered a new phase of democratic practice following a free and fair election. He also stressed the role of culture in strengthening democratic movements, saying songs, poetry and dance had historically inspired people during political struggles. Speaking at the same event, Road Transport and Railways Minister Habibur Rashid Habib said cultural heritage and the spirit of the July uprising should be harnessed to build a more equitable and humane society.
