BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday criticized the misuse of social media, alleging that coordinated disinformation campaigns are being used to undermine democratic politics and create instability in the country.
Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club in memory of the late Mahbubul Haque and Mahbubul Alam Tara, Fakhrul said false and offensive content is being spread online to damage political discourse and target BNP leaders. He claimed that an organized group is attempting to undermine democratic gains and create unrest through digital propaganda.
Describing BNP as a liberal democratic party committed to citizens’ rights and the rule of law, Fakhrul urged people to remain vigilant against anti-democratic forces using social media to spread misinformation.
BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu echoed the concerns, alleging that politically motivated “bot networks” are being used to manipulate public opinion and discredit political leaders online. He warned that greater public awareness is needed to counter such activities and safeguard the country’s democratic process and stability.
