Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday called on citizens to remain vigilant against what he described as attempts by a vested group to destabilise the country and hinder its progress.

Speaking at a public reception marking the inauguration of the newly established Ruhia Upazila in Thakurgaon, Fakhrul said the government was moving forward with its development agenda under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman while certain quarters were trying to create instability.

He urged people not to be misled and to remain united in resisting any efforts aimed at disrupting political stability and national development.

Highlighting the government's initiatives, Fakhrul said programmes such as family cards, agricultural support cards, and nationwide canal excavation projects were being implemented to improve people's livelihoods. He also referred to Bangladesh's recent election to the presidency of the UN General Assembly as a significant diplomatic achievement.

The minister announced several development plans for Thakurgaon, including the establishment of a medical college and a public university, as well as efforts to reopen the long-idle Thakurgaon airport within the next two years. He also said road infrastructure and religious institutions in the region would receive increased support.

Expressing concern over rising drug abuse among young people, Fakhrul called for greater participation in sports, cultural activities, and social initiatives to steer youth away from addiction and help build responsible future leadership.
