Early green beans hit Tk 200 per kg in Dhaka

Prices of fish, meat and eggs remained largely stable in Dhaka's markets this week, whereas early-season green beans climbed to Tk 200 per kilogram, according to a market survey conducted in the capital on Friday (October 2).

Most common vegetables, including eggplant, bitter gourd, yardlong beans, okra, pointed gourd and spiny gourd, were selling for between Tk 70 and Tk 120 per kg. Cucumbers were available for Tk 50-60, while local varieties cost Tk 80-100 per kg, and green chillies were priced at Tk 120-140 depending on quality. Meanwhile, papaya was the cheapest of the surveyed vegetables at a mere Tk 30 per kg.

Poultry and egg prices likewise remained unchanged, with broiler chicken selling for Tk 180 per kg and Sonali chicken for Tk 320, while farm eggs cost Tk 155 per dozen or Tk 55 for four. Moreover, fish prices ranged from Tk 250-260 per kg for tilapia and Tk 220-230 for pangas to Tk 380-420 for rohu and catla, whereas shrimp fetched between Tk 1,000 and Tk1,300.

Traders explained that fish prices fluctuate according to size, quality, and whether the fish is sold alive or dead. Consequently, the price of the same variety may differ by Tk 10-20 per kg from one market to another, and shoppers who compare prices across several stalls may find considerable savings.
