Police have sought a seven-day remand of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, for interrogation in a case lodged over the alleged abetment of suicide following the death of his second wife, Mariam Begum.

Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarker, the investigating officer of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, submitted the remand application on Monday (September 21). Previously, police recovered Mariam's body from a flat at NAM Bhaban in the capital on Sunday, whereupon her father, Md Masum Billah, filed a case naming Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam's uncle, Obaidur Rahman, as accused. Moreover, the complaint alleges that Mariam endured physical and mental abuse after marrying Nazrul under Islamic law in June and had apprised her family of the alleged mistreatment.

Police cited five grounds for seeking remand, including ascertaining whether the accused exerted any influence over Mariam's death, scrutinising allegations of incitement, intimidation or psychological pressure, and probing Obaidur Rahman's alleged role. Furthermore, investigators said they sought to identify and apprehend any other individuals who may have been implicated and to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Earlier, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Nazrul in July following an organisational investigation into allegations of moral misconduct. Subsequently, he secured eight-week bail from the High Court in a separate case linked to the circulation of videos involving Mariam.
