Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected calls for a coordinated slowdown in artificial intelligence development, arguing that individual AI companies should determine the pace required to develop their systems safely. In a post on X on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said AI companies already have strong incentives to make their models safe, given the potential legal liability they face should their systems cause harm.

His comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the industry to slow the development of advanced AI, a proposal that received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk. Zuckerberg, by contrast, maintained that market and legal pressures were already sufficient to keep AI developers accountable, without the need for coordinated restraint across the industry.

Zuckerberg cited Meta's decision to delay the release of its Muse AI agent for several months in order to strengthen its security, noting that the company took this step without calling on other firms to halt their own work. Meanwhile, he argued that AI developers should concentrate more on building safe systems than on creating models capable of autonomously improving themselves, amid growing debate over the risks of advanced AI and whether it could eventually evade human control.
