Bangladesh's dengue outbreak has intensified sharply, with six more deaths and 1,608 fresh hospital admissions recorded in the past 24 hours, lifting this year's death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 250.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the cumulative number of hospitalised patients has climbed to 82,761, while September alone accounted for 148 deaths and 43,774 admissions, underscoring the severity of the current seasonal surge. Of the latest fatalities, two were from areas under Dhaka South City Corporation, two were recorded in Rajshahi Division, and Barishal and Khulna divisions reported one each. Five of the deceased were men, and one was a woman. Furthermore, 76,862 patients have recovered and been discharged so far this year.

Dhaka Division continues to bear the heaviest burden, with more than 33,000 hospital admissions and 116 deaths reported in the capital and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, health experts have attributed the heightened transmission to a confluence of factors, including shifting weather patterns, persistent rainfall and unplanned urbanisation. Against this backdrop, entomologists and physicians have urged more intensive source-reduction campaigns and stronger public awareness alongside hospital-based treatment.

In addition, the Health Ministry has issued directives to ensure adequate treatment for dengue patients at government hospitals. Nevertheless, medical professionals stress that removing stagnant water around homes and neighbourhoods remains fundamental to curbing the proliferation of Aedes mosquitoes.
