ADhaka court on Sunday denied bail to former lawmaker and freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman and ordered him sent to jail in a case filed over allegedly creating chaos and obstructing government officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order around 3:15pm after police produced Akhtaruzzaman before the court following completion of his one-day remand.

Sub-inspector Majedul Islam of Airport police station, the investigation officer in the case, sought an order to keep Akhtaruzzaman in jail until completion of the investigation.

His lawyers, however, sought bail for him. After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail plea and ordered that he be sent to jail.

Akhtaruzzaman was placed on a one-day remand on Saturday after Detective Branch police arrested him from his residence in the capital’s Cantonment area on Friday.

The case was filed following an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on October 1 over baggage delays and a shortage of trolleys.

According to the case statement, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly engaged in a heated argument with airport executive director Group Captain SM Rageeb Samad and threatened him.

He was also accused of physically assaulting a security officer who tried to stop him from recording video in a restricted area, throwing bottles of Zamzam water and behaving aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
