United Nations General Assembly President Dr Khalilur Rahman has said the UN is not perfect but remains indispensable, with no imaginable alternative for global peace and security. Referring to his opening remarks at the 81st UNGA session, he called for reforms to make the organisation more effective and fit for the future.

Khalilur said the UN must honestly identify areas where it is falling behind and reform institutional structures and procedures that are no longer effective. He also called for broader participation in decision-making, including industry leaders, young people and other stakeholders who can contribute to global change.

Emphasising global trust, Khalilur said, “Trust cannot be demanded; it has to be earned.” He urged the UN to be realistic in addressing complex global challenges, courageous in pursuing necessary reforms and open to wider stakeholder participation to build a stronger, future-ready organisation.
