Fish, meat and chicken prices remain high, eggs get cheaper

Consumers in Dhaka continue to find scant relief in the prices of fish, chicken and meat, with most items selling at last week's rates. Egg prices, however, have declined by Tk 10 per dozen, with a dozen now retailing at Tk 140–145, compared with Tk 150–155 a week earlier, according to market visits conducted on Friday.
Beef is selling at Tk 800 per kilogram, while broiler chicken remains unchanged at Tk 190. Meanwhile, prices of Sonali, hybrid and layer chickens have eased by Tk 10 per kilogram to Tk 310–320, Tk 290–300 and Tk 350, respectively. Farmed pangas and tilapia are priced at Tk 230 and Tk 260 per kilogram, while shrimp costs Tk 800–900, pabda Tk 350–450 and large rohu Tk 450–500.

Fish prices, nevertheless, remain volatile, with some varieties rising by Tk 20–30 per kilogram and others declining by Tk 10–20, sellers said. Furthermore, premium varieties such as pomfret, shol and river sand goby are selling above Tk 1,000 per kilogram, exerting additional pressure on low-income consumers. Fish seller Mahiuddin said prices can fluctuate throughout the day depending on supply, demand and weather conditions, while egg trader Masum confirmed the Tk 10 weekly decline in egg prices.
