Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid solemn tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War on Saturday, laying a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar in his first official engagement since assuming the country's highest constitutional office.
The President arrived at the National Memorial at 10:22 am, where he laid a wreath in homage to the countless heroes who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War. Having paid his respects, he stood in silent contemplation for several moments, a gesture that underscored the solemnity of the occasion. A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from the three armed forces subsequently accorded him a guard of honour, a customary mark of distinction extended to the head of state.
Following the ceremony, the President signed the visitors' book at the memorial, formally recording his visit. Given the significance of the occasion, an elaborate security cordon was thrown around the memorial and its surrounding precincts, reflecting the heightened vigilance that typically accompanies such high-profile engagements.

The visit came a day after Alamgir, the former secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was sworn in as Bangladesh's 23rd president at Bangabhaban on Friday evening. Acting Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal administered the oath at the Darbar Hall, with Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani overseeing proceedings. Alamgir's ascent to the presidency followed his decisive victory in Thursday's parliamentary vote -- the first contested presidential election held in decades -- in which he prevailed over his rival by a substantial margin.
