Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has affirmed that the government is implementing multifaceted measures to guarantee financial security, better healthcare and a dignified life for older citizens, in a message marking the International Day of Older Persons 2026, which will be observed on Thursday under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives".

In his message, the prime minister said the government was broadening social protection and creating greater opportunities for senior citizens to live safely and with dignity. Furthermore, he observed that rising life expectancy, driven by advances in medical science and heightened health awareness, was opening up new opportunities while simultaneously necessitating more responsive and inclusive systems for healthcare, social protection and family support. Accordingly, he noted that the government had raised the old-age allowance and extended its coverage, while the Family Card programme was being used to deliver direct financial assistance, expand primary healthcare and reinforce the social safety net for vulnerable families.

Moreover, Tarique stressed the importance of keeping older people socially engaged and safeguarding their physical and mental wellbeing. He urged families, communities and the state alike to uphold respect, compassion and responsibility towards the elderly, describing them as a vital cornerstone of society whose experience, sacrifice and wisdom had contributed significantly to the country's development.
