Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, priced from $1,999, marking a substantial departure from its conventional design philosophy as the technology giant seeks to consolidate its position within the rapidly burgeoning foldable smartphone market.
Designed to evoke the silhouette of a passport when folded, the iPhone Duo unfolds to reveal a 7.6-inch display capable of functioning in either landscape or portrait orientation. Apple maintains that it is the thinnest iPhone ever produced when fully unfolded, notwithstanding the fact that it remains somewhat bulkier than rival foldable models from Chinese manufacturers. The device boasts a titanium body and a meticulously engineered hinge; moreover, Apple asserts that its design marries the portability of a conventional smartphone with the immersive, tablet-like viewing experience users have come to expect from larger devices. It also facilitates multitasking, enabling users to run multiple applications and keep several windows open concurrently, while affording a considerably broader field of view during video calls and messaging conversations.
The device is powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip alongside its proprietary C2 modem, reflecting the company's wider endeavour to curtail its dependence on Qualcomm components. Furthermore, Apple claims the handset can deliver up to 24 hours of mixed-use battery life across its dual-screen configuration and reach 50% charge within a mere 20 minutes. The premium price tag, however, could prove a formidable deterrent for prospective buyers. Nevertheless, the International Data Corporation (IDC) has forecast that Apple could capture approximately 40% of the global foldable-phone market by the end of next year, notwithstanding the entrenched positions currently held by Samsung and Huawei, particularly within China.

Alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, priced from $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, along with new AirPods starting at $129 and updated Apple Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 models boasting enhanced health and fitness capabilities. Consequently, the launch represents considerably more than a routine product refresh; rather, it could herald a pivotal shift in Apple's broader strategy and potentially accelerate the transition of foldable smartphones from a premium niche into the mainstream marketplace.
