Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has called for stronger safeguards and government oversight of artificial intelligence, warning that increasingly powerful systems could cause catastrophic harm if exploited by malicious actors.
In an NBC News interview, Gates urged governments and law-enforcement agencies to join discussions on safeguards, monitoring and regulation, arguing that AI's growing capabilities make it increasingly important to address potential misuse. His remarks come as the UK-based Alan Turing Institute has warned of near-term risks from frontier AI, including the possibility that highly capable systems could surpass human abilities in important cognitive tasks and thereby challenge human control.
