Elon Musk has predicted that artificial intelligence could surpass humans in almost every field by the end of 2027 or, at the latest, by 2028. He made the remarks on X while responding to an earlier prediction by AI researcher François Chollet about the growing influence of computing across scientific disciplines.
Chollet recently revisited a 2021 post in which he argued that fields including physics, chemistry, biology and archaeology could increasingly become dependent on computational methods. AI is already being used for data analysis, complex simulations and scientific discoveries, including protein structure prediction, materials research and climate modelling.

Musk has repeatedly predicted an earlier arrival of human-level or superhuman AI. In 2017, he suggested it could occur by 2030–2040, while at the World Economic Forum in January he said AI could become more intelligent than any individual by the end of 2026 or, at the latest, 2027. He also predicted that AI could surpass the combined intelligence of humanity within the following five years.
