Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged every citizen to plant at least one tree to help ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
Addressing the public after inaugurating the nationwide programme to plant 250 million trees at the Malumghat Reserved Forest in Dulahazara, the Prime Minister called on people to think about their children's future and contribute to building a pollution-free Bangladesh.
"I appeal to everyone in the country to plant at least one tree wherever possible, keeping in mind that our children deserve to breathe fresh air and grow up in a healthy environment," he said.
Emphasising the importance of environmental protection, Tarique Rahman said a successful tree plantation campaign would help guarantee cleaner air and a safer environment for future generations.
Referring to the government's election pledge, he said the BNP had promised to launch a nationwide afforestation programme if elected to office, with a target of planting at least 50 million trees annually. "Over the next five years, we aim to plant 250 million trees across the country," he added.
The Prime Minister also urged deputy commissioners across the country to take initiatives to transform their respective districts into greener and more environmentally sustainable areas.
