Ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies plans to deploy 500 specialized data-collection vehicles worldwide this year, aiming to accelerate the development of autonomous driving technology through large-scale real-world road data gathering.

According to a report by TechCrunch, Uber Technologies is preparing to launch a fleet of 500 specially equipped vehicles to collect road and traffic data for self-driving vehicle development.

The company has developed a customized version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, fitted with an array of sensors on its roof and sides. Each vehicle will carry 14 cameras, eight lidar sensors, and nine radar units to capture detailed information about roads, vehicles, pedestrians, and surrounding environments.

Uber said the fleet could gather data from roughly two million miles of driving every month. The company aims to have at least 50 of the vehicles operating on public roads by next summer.

The collected data will not only be stored but also used to train autonomous driving software, helping improve the safety and reliability of robotaxi systems.

Uber said its long-term goal is to build one of the world's most diverse autonomous-vehicle datasets, incorporating real-world driving conditions from different cities, countries, and environments.
