The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday ordered the authorities of public universities to close evening courses at all public universities as those courses are tarnishing the image of the academic institutions.

The regulatory body issued a 13-point directive to the vice chancellors of the public universities across the country.

The directives include proper execution of vice chancellors' responsibilities, receiving UGC's approval before opening a new department and position, following university rules while providing employment and promotion, a press release signed by Dr Shamsul Arefin, director of communication and information rights department of the UGC said.

The orders came after President and also the Chancellor of public universities Abdul Hamid on Wednesday in DU convocation said a section of teachers were turning public universities into business institutions by running evening courses outside the regular academic activities.
