Padma Bridge’s 2.5-km now visible

The 16th span of the Padma Bridge was installed on Tuesday around 1:00 pm between the pillars 16 and 17. With this, a total of 2400 meters or almost 2.5 km of the bridge is now visible.

Earlier at around 10:00 am, the span was taken by the floating crane ‘Tinai’ from the construction yard of the Padma Bridge at Kumarvog Union of the Lohajang, Munshiganj. As the crane reaches pillars 16 and 17 on the bridge, the work of installing was started. 

The 3-D Span had been fitted for the pillar long ago. The span was carried from the Mawa Kumarvog Construction Yard at 10:00 am. Later at 1:00 pm, it was installed on pillars 16 and 17, said Humayun Kabir, engineer of the Padma Bridge.

He said that there are plans to put four more spans on the pillars 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 at bridges this year. On October 22 this year, the 15th span ‘4-E’ was placed on the 23rd and 24th pillars at Jazeera point. 

Meanwhile, out of 41 spans, there are 31 spans in Mawa. Of these, 15 spans have been installed. At the lower part of the bridge, 362 railway slabs are placed. A total of 2959 precast slabs will be required. Of these, 2,924 have been completed.

The construction of the bridge began on December 2014, costing an estimated Tk 30193.388 crore (US$1.1 billion) . China Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited (MBEC), a Chinese contractor, is working to construct the main bridge and another company, Sino Hydro Corporation, is working on the river system.
