A Chattogram court has sentenced BNP Vice-Chairman Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury to three years imprisonment in a case that involves ‘assassination threats’ against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahidullah Kaisar of Chittagong announced the verdict on Wednesday.

The court also fined him Tk 5 thousand. In default, he will have to be in prison for three more months.

On the death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman in 2018, Giasuddin in a discussion said the fate of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will turn out to be worse than that of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975.

A report based on the statement was published in a local newspaper.

The day after the incident, BCL Upazila Chairman Jamal Uddin filed a case with Fatikchhari Police Station. Local BNP leader Sarwar Alamgir and 50-60 others were also accused in the case.

Giasuddin is the brother of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who was executed for crimes against humanity in 2015.
