Leaders of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik-Sramik Oikya League (BSPMSOL) on Tuesday urged the government to conduct drives also in the transport sector to end ‘corruption and harassment by godfathers and police’.

They came up with the call at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

BSPMSOL member secretary Ismail Hossain Bachchu read out a written statement at the press conference demanding a safe and extortion-free transport sector in the country.

“We transport owners are now worried amid rampant extortion by godfathers, and corruption and harassment by police on roads and highways across the country,” said Ismail Hossain.

He also demanded that rest-houses be constructed for transport workers at all bus and truck terminals and mobile hospitals for the treatment of workers who suffer injuries in road accidents.

BSPMSOL convener SM Shah Alam also spoke at the press conference emphasising the need for a drive in the transport sector.
