Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, in an extortion case.

But he cannot walk out of jail as Kafrul police on Monday appealed to the court to show him arrested in another case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mazharul Haque passed the order after Mozammel’s lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua move a petition before the court seeking his bail.

Meanwhile, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said there is no legal bar for his release as the order for showing Mozammel arrested in the case filed under the Explosive Substances Act is pending for hearing on September 13.

On September 6, police arrested Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a platform working for passengers' rights, from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj around 3:00 am, two days after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur Police Station.

In the case statement, complainant Md Dulal alleged that Mozammel, claiming to be a transport leader, demanded Tk 2 lakh from him, and he gave Mozammel Tk 10,000 in front of Sony Cinema Hall in Mirpur on September 3.
