Dhaka: Two people were killed in what law enforcers claimed to be a 'gunfight' near the Beribandh area under Rupnagar police station in the capital early Wednesday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known, however, the Detective Branch (DB) claimed they were muggers.

Rupnagar Police Station sub-inspector Mominur Rahman said, tipped off, a DB police team went to the area around 5:00 am Wednesday.

"Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, four muggers in a private car started shooting at them prompting DB to retaliate which triggered a gunfight and at one point two of them were wounded with bullets and the rest managed to flee the spot," he said.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

DB also seized the private car, he added.
