Dhaka: Though police have claimed that the youth killed in a 'gunfight' was the mastermind of the killing of science writer Avijit Roy and banned Ansarullah Bangla Team member Shariful, his relatives have said his name is Mukul Rana.

The deceased's brother-in-law Hedayetul Islam amd cousin Rahmat Ali identified the body of Mukul, 25 at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue on Monday.

Hedayetul Islam told reporters that they came to Dhaka Medical College Hospital witnessing his photo in a newspaper. They have identified him after witnessing his body. His name is Mukul Rana and his father's name is Abul Kalam Azad. He hailed from village Baluigacha under Satkhira Police Station.

However, they said they were not aware of anything that Mukul was involved in any militant organisation or any crime.

Hedayetul Islam said Mukul Rana was a 4th year student of the Department of English at Satkhira Government College. He had a brother and a sister. He was the second among his siblings. They are not affluent financially. His father has shrimp hatchery in Satkhira. Mukul Rana came to Dhaka from Satkhira one year ago for job. He went to his village home in February last and married one Mohua Sultana. Later, he came back to Dhaka. He used to live at Uttara in Dhaka.

However, Hedayetul Islam could not say anything about where Mukul Rana used to live in Uttara and what he did there.

Besides, he could not say whether Mukul had been missing or not.

Hedayetul Islam also said he lived in Satkhira and worked in a company there.

Sources said Khilgaon Police Station sub-inspector Al Mamun on Sunday afternoon completed the first information report (FIR) of deceased and mentioned his name as Shariful. But, executive magistrate Md Ilyas Mehedi refused to sign on the FIR without the national identity card or guardians. Later, the FIR of the body was done as 'unidentified.'

Shariful was killed in a 'gunfight' with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police at Banshpotti area in Khilgaon on Sunday night. Though the deceased was mentioned as 'unidentified' at the beginning, police later said his name was Shariful alias Saleh alias Arif. He was involved in Avijit murder.

Besides, the DMP announced reward for information about six Ansarullah Bangla Team members who were involved in bloggers' and publishers' murder. Shariful was one of them. The DMP also announced Tk 5 lakh reward for the informant about him.
