Dhaka: To enhance quality of higher education and monitoring the activities of the universities the government has taken steps to transform the University Grant Commission (UGC) into Higher Education Commission (HEC).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday made the disclosure while distributing the Prime Minister Gold Medal- 2011 and 2012 among public university students at her office.

The premier said drafting of an act to transform the UGC into HEC is in final stage. “Establishment of a Higher Education Accreditation is also underway to internationalize the country's higher education,” he said.

The government has also taken up a project called "Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) to make higher education multifaceted and improve its quality to meet the international standard, she added.

A total of 166 students who showed their excellence in graduate and post-graduate studies in different public universities received the medal and certificates from the Prime Minister, who expressed her pleasure for a sizeable number of female students among the recipients.

With chairman of the UGC Professor Abdul Mannan in the chair, the function was attended by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and UGC member Professor Dil Afroza Begum.
